The Grand Western Canal Country Park meanders for 11 ¼ miles through beautiful mid-Devon countryside and quiet villages and is managed by Devon County Council for recreation, wildlife and historic interest.  

PLEASE NOTE THAT FOR SAFETY REASONS ALL TRAMPER USERS MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY A NON-DISABLED COMPANION AT THIS SITE.

Due to the historic bridges along the canal and the narrow width of towpath underneath these structures, people using the Tramper need to read the following safety information before visiting and using the Tramper:

• Using a Tramper along the canal is perfectly safe, but extra caution is required as you will be close to the water's edge in places.
• The narrowest bridges have been excluded from the Tramper route and Tramper users can detour around one narrow bridge.
• All Tramper users at this site must be accompanied by a non-disabled companion. The companion will be required to walk through bridges ahead of the Tramper user to make sure no-one is coming the other way.
• Tramper users must not reverse or attempt to turn around underneath or near bridges.A map will be provided for you showing wider turning areas.

The towpath is used by walkers, cyclists and anglers and an increasing number of boats may be seen cruising the canal. The canal is perhaps best known for the colourful horse-drawn barge which has been taking passengers for trips along the canal since 1974.

The Tramper can be used along approximately 7 miles of towpath in total. Accessible toilets are available at the two principal destinations for Tramper users setting off from Abbotshood Cycle Hire, these being the Canal Basin in Tiverton and the village of Sampford Peverell.
